Elaine Mosher will be remembered by her family and friends as loving, warm, honest, and effortlessly funny. She loved animals, gardening, anything to do with nature, and spending time with her loved ones as often as she could.
The family of Elaine, who was killed by her male partner on January 5th at their home in Mahone Bay, wants the public to realize that she is so much more than a victim. "She is this incredibly loved person in her community, and that's why it's important to name her and to talk about who she was and the life she touched," said Emma Halpern, Executive Director of Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia.
Elaine was one of six women killed by their male partners in Nova Scotia since September, making it "terrifyingly clear that the prevalence of this violence, and other forms of gender-based violence, can be considered as no less than an epidemic."
Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, mayor of Mahone Bay and former Liberal member of the legislature, explained that the rapidly rising cost of housing prevents victims from leaving their abusive partners: "Where do you live if you leave your partner? Who rents to a single woman who may not have an income or doesn't have a big enough income to pay for her own place? There's all kinds of things we have to think about to assist people to get out of a dangerous situation."
